Quarteto canadense que há vinte anos empunha a bandeira do metal com fidelidade e paixão ao som mais tradicional; lançado originalmente em 2004, somente agora este seu quarto trabalho chega às nossas mãos tendo como produtor o experiente Jean-François Dagenais e na formação Pascal Cliche (gt/v), Patrick Gravel (gt), Denis Cossette (b) e Luc Guay (bat), sendo que estes dois últimos foram susbstituídos respectivamente em 2005 por Laurent Imbeau e Sylvain Trembley. Se por um lado no primeiro trabalho eles soavam/seguiam mais a escola do Jag Panzer oitentista (dos primeiros álbuns), com o passar dos álbuns mantiveram-se na escola tradicional, mas passando a assimilar mais influências do power metal oitentista com a NWOBHM e muitas das suas variações, mudanças de andamento e passagens, lembram o Iron Maiden em seus melhores momentos, mas sem necessariamente copiar e fazendo disto um de seus maiores méritos pois o fazem com muita classe.

Viel geändert hat sich im Lager der Kanadier HANKER nicht. Auch vier Jahre nach dem letzten Studioalbum Snakes And Ladders kredenzen uns die Herrschaften ihren amerikanisch tönenden Power Metal mit einer Vielzahl an Melodien, wobei man in Anbetracht der bisherigen Historie der Formation durchaus sagen kann, dass HANKER im Laufe der Zeit immer melodiöser geworden sind.

Des Öfteren fühlt man sich an längst vergessene Formationen erinnert, die seinerzeit für leuchtende Augen und knallrote Ohren gesorgt haben, als der Begriff «US-Metal» gefallen ist. Auch Web Of Faith überzeugt durch messerscharfes Riffing, einprägsame Melodien und packende Refrains, wobei der Mitgröhl-Faktor immens hoch ist und HANKER deshalb auch auf den Bühnen dieser Welt reüssieren können sollten. Es wäre den Kanadiern zu wünschen, mit ihrem neuen Label im Rücken endlich die nötige finanzielle Unterstützung zu erhalten um die eingeschworene Fangemeinde nicht wieder vier Jahre auf ein Album warten zu lassen! www.hankermetal.com

After a 4 year absence from the scene, French Canadian true metal veterans Hanker have returned with their 4th opus, Web Of Faith. Over time, Quebec's finest metal troupe have evolved from a good but quirky act with progressive overtones and a basement-level production ethic to a much more polished, professional and dangerous traditional metal beast. To my ears, their 2000 effort, Snakes And Ladders, marked a real breakthrough for the band with a huge step forward in songwriting, cohesiveness of sound, and professionalism. That CD's lead track, Ad Patres, was one of my favorite songs during the year of its release, and the overall package garnered Hanker many favorable comparisons to the mighty Colorado metal machine, Jag Panzer, which is high praise indeed.

Web Of Faith sagely follows in the footsteps of its predecessor, both stylistically and in terms of quality. Once again, Hanker's formula for success revolves around straightforward, midtempo songwriting constructed on the backs of excellent traditional metal riffs and solos. The guitar work of Pascal Cliche and Patrick Gravel deserves special mention, inasmuch as they've delivered a stellar collection of top-shelf riffage and the occasional Hansen/Weikath inflected harmonies. Nearly every song draws the listener in immediately with a high-caliber riff destined to exercise the neck muscles as it exorcises the demons. Despite the high overall catchiness factor, it would be a mistake to lump Hanker in with the «happy European power metal» scene (so derisively tagged «tra la la» metal in certain nefarious corners of the Web). The music has a dark, aggressive vibe, perhaps because of the powerful bite to the guitars and the slightly acrid aftertaste to the vocals of Cliche. Band comparisons are tricky here, but once again I'd say that Hanker are most similar in approach to Jag Panzer, both in terms of the feel of the music and the general style. (Oh, and is it just me or is that first riff in Under Cover Of Darkness eerily reminiscent of Panzer's Shadow Thief?) That said, Hanker diverge from the Colorado heroes because of their much less flashy lead guitar player, their singer who foregoes many of the Tyrant's legendary vocal histrionics, and their propensity to pay homage to European conventions (double-bass parts, Helloweeny/Primal Fear harmonies) more frequently than do JFP. A comparison to Reviver might be appropriate too, but without the NWOBHM influence and variegated attack of the Dutchmen.

This CD is meat 'n' potatoes heavy metal. It is solid, it is utterly dependable, and it is extremely professional in all areas, from musicianship to production (courtesy of a member of Canada's death/blast merchants Kataklysm) to songwriting. Web Of Faith makes a great metallic soundtrack for doing just about anything. Nonetheless, don't expect this CD to knock you off your feet for 2 reasons. First, there is a certain lack of dynamics in the songwriting, with few twists and turns in terms of melodies, tempos, choruses or arrangements, which can tend to make the 61 minute affair run together as the band lock into a good midtempo riff and dish out the verse-chorus-solo-verse thing, then repeat the exercise. 2nd, singer Cliche is a bit of an acquired taste. I enjoy his clean, laid-back approach, but his range is unquestionably limited and some might long for a more fiery, revved-up vocal performance.

All told, I can't imagine anyone who enjoys Snakes And Ladders, or any fan of well done guitar-driven traditional metal with European power metal influences not being thoroughly pleased with songs like Empower, The Search, Under Cover Of Darkness, and Stigmata. Even in these times of oversaturation of the traditional/true/power metal market, there will always be a prominent place in my regular CD rotation for an opus that covers all the bases as effectively as Web Of Faith does. I strongly suspect there's room in your collection too.

Warum Ausnahmebands wie HANKER wohl für den Rest ihres Bestehens dazu verdammt sind, unbemerkt von der breiten öffentlichkeit im Untergrund dahinzudümpeln, weiss allein der Teufel. Dabei machen die Jungs einzig und allen den «Fehler», sich nicht mit jedem Release krampfhaft neu erfinden zu wollen. Stattdessen sorgt HANKER's traditioneller, melodischer Power Metal jedesmal wieder für hocherfreutes Kopfnicken bei jedem gestandenen Metalfan.

Ziemlich genau ein Jahr ist es nun her, seit HANKER ihr viertes und bislang letztes Album Web Of Faith auf den Markt warfen. Hier treffen geile, einprägsame Melodien auf stahlharte Metallgranaten. Das ausgefeilte Songwriting, das sich nie in unnötigen Details verliert, aber dennoch tolle Spannungsbögen aufbaut und damit einen gewissen Anspruch vermittelt, spielt bei HANKER eine gewichtige Hauptrolle. Man höre nur in den schlicht genialen Stampfer Between The Devil And The Deep Blue Sea hinein - ein Gänsehautgarant sondergleichen. Dazu kommt, dass Frontmann und Gitarrist Pascal Cliche über ein begnadetes Organ verfügt, das mich ab und zu an eine etwas weniger agressive Ausgabe von Ex-IRON MAIDEN Sänger Blaze Bayley erinnert, besonders bei The Search und bei Point Of No Return.

Wer auf traditionellen Power Metal mit einer grossen Portion Eigenständigkeit Wert legt, dem sei Web Of Faith hiermit dringend ans Herz gelegt. Das gute Teil ist übrigens bei Hellion Records zu beziehen.

Hanker should be huge. So why aren't they? Is it the band name that stops people from taking them seriously? Maybe it brings to mind the old commercial with the cartoon dude «hankering for a hunka, a slice or slab or chunka cheese»? Maybe it's because they are from Quebec, Canada? Maybe it's that their euro-power metal sound doesn't go down as well in North America? To be fair, the band has had some success and they do have a loyal following, as I'm sure some Hanker fans are boiling at my questions! The question I continue to have is why aren't they huge? If you like traditional/power metal, you should do yourself a favor and check out Hanker!

Empower is a great opener for the CD with fast riffing and great playing. Currently this is my favorite track on the CD. Stigmata is another ear-opener with a very powerful melodic chorus carried by the vocals. The Search starts out with some thrashy riffing before breaking into Maiden inspired territory. If you love old Maiden riffing (POWERSLAVE-era comes to mind) then there is lots to discover on here such as in Under Cover Of Darkness, Face To Face, and the multi-faceted and lengthy track Web Of Faith. The only thing holding this album from a 5/5 rating is the ballad tracks starting with Between The Devil And The Deep Blue Sea which drags right from the beginning. It does pick up around 1:20, but by then my attention is lost and I usually have hit the skip button to the next track. Hanker are not a ballad band! This is also the problem with The Hunstsman which gets better after the clean guitar opening but is still too slow and drags.

I'm at a loss as to why this band isn't up there in the international scene with the other power/traditional metal greats. Give them a chance and find out what you've been missing. Hopefully Hanker will persevere, stay true to the path they are on... and release another album without such a long wait (the last album was from 2000)!! Web Of Faith is their best release to date, and it's high time the band got the attention it deserves!

Sorti depuis le milieu août 2004, le tout dernier bébé de Hanker, Web Of Faith, est en fait leur quatrième album studio en carrière. Il a donc fallu attendre un gros quatre ans depuis la parution de Snakes And Ladders en 2000 pour avoir la chance de savourer un autre album de Hanker. Je dois dire que l'attente en valait grandement la peine, car les vétérans du heavy/power métal québécois ont mis le paquet afin de combler les attentes de leurs fans sur tous les points. Performant dans la scène métal depuis 1985, Hanker est, à mon avis, très sous-estimé et devrait occuper une place beaucoup plus importante sur la scène québécoise et internationale car, croyez-moi, ils ont vraiment le talent pour en éclipser plus d'un. Web Of Faith en est la preuve.

Pour ceux qui connaissent un peu moins Hanker et leurs membres, depuis la formation du groupe en 1985, sur les quatres membres originaux qui formaient le groupe, il reste en fait aujourd'hui que le duo guitariste/chanteur, Pascal Cliche et Patrick Gravel. Par contre, le batteur Luc Guay performe dans le groupe depuis que Jean-François Fillion à été remplacé en 1990 et donc, on peut dire qu'il fait quasiment parti des membres originaux. De plus, pour remplacer l'ancien bassiste Martin Jones, Denis Cossette fit son entrée dans Hanker en 1998, soit un peu après l'album The Dead Ringer.

Pour les avoir vu souvent en spectacle et en ouverture de plusieurs groupes de renommée comme Helloween dernièrement en octobre 2003, Hanker sait livrer la marchandise autant live que sur cd. Sur Web Of Faith, c'est un peu plus d'une heure d'heavy métal qui nous est présenté. Sonnant beaucoup moins power métal que les 2 albums précédents, Web Of Faith est ce qu'on pourrait appeler un retour aux sources. Avec des influences comme Iron Maiden, Metal Church, Judas Priest et plusieurs autres groupes des années 70 et 80, Hanker a tout pour faire sortir l'atmosphère et le feeling d'un groupe heavy métal. Sur Web Of Faith, c'est une pure atmosphère d'heavy métal traditionnel qui est transmise, ce qui nous transporte sans aucune difficulté dans le mood du cd, qui est en sorte un bon voyage dans le passé. Et bien sûr, que serait un album d'heavy métal sans les magnifiques solos de guitare? Ce serait comme cracher sur les traditions, mais rassurez-vous, les oeuvres d'Hanker possèdent des solos alléchants et des riffs émouvants qui font dresser les poils sur les bras. Vous n'avez qu'à écouter la première pièce Empower, Stigmata ou l'excellente Let Me Out pour comprendre pourquoi Hanker est un des meilleurs groupes québécois et pourquoi il éclipse même plusieurs maîtres du genre.

De plus, pour ajouter au prestige de Web Of Faith, les 12 pièces se trouvant sur le compact ont été mixées par Jean-François Dagenais, lui qui a déjà travaillé avec des bands aussi bon que Kataklysm mais aussi avec plusieurs autres groupes québécois et internationaux comme les américains Malevolent Creation. Alors ne vous posez pas de questions sur la qualité sonore et la production de Web Of Faith. Elle est parfaite. Web Of Faith possède un son clair, les guitares sonnent vraies et les vocaux sont percutants, ce qui nous oblige vraisemblablement à chanter avec eux.

Distribué par Skycraper Music, Web Of Faith constitue, selon moi, un des meilleurs albums du genre à sortir en 2004. Bref, 2004 fut une année fructueuse pour la scène métal québécoise. Tous les fans d'heavy métal devraient jeter un regard sincère à Web Of Faith et se le procurer sans ancune hésitation. Pour les autres, mettez vos préjugés de côté, et laissez-vous aller dans l'univers du heavy métal.

Canadian power metal that stands out above the field of contenders, Hanker is one of those bands who offer enough diversity within the genre not to be pigeon-holed with the rest of the pack.

Leading off with Empower, Hanker immediately lets you know that they are not abandoning the sound they crafted so well on their Snakes And Ladders release. Inside Me take a bit of an Iron Maiden approach with a mild sprinkling of earlier Metallica, which seems to be a theme throughout the disc. Stigmata begins with a similar approach.

Reading some other reviews of the CD, I noticed that a reviewer mentioned a comparison to Fifth Angel. At first, I was a bit sceptical, but Let Me Out has a style that would fit in perfectly on either of Fifth Angel's releases. The mellower Between The Devil And The Deep Blue Sea falls into the same territory as well as calling to mind 220 Volt's Nightwinds musically. Under Cover Of Darkness has a feel that calls to mind Mike Howe era Metal Church. Face To Face has a Fifth Angel meets Iron Maiden gallop to it that is really interesting with lead singer Pascal Cliche sounding quite similar to Ted Pilot.

The guitars of Patrick Gravel and Pascal Cliche, smoke mightily on the slower-paced The Huntsman, a finely crafted song that shines on the merits of expressive playing with its contrasting heavier and subtler moments. The closing title cut in a 7-minute plus track that features a coming together of all the finer points of the CD making for a bold finale to the disc.

Hanker once again delivers an excellent release in a field that is easy to get lost in. As with most Canadian metal releases, the musicianship is top-notch and the vocals of Pascal Cliche are dynamic.

Und viel geändert, im Vergleich zum Vorgänger, hat sich auch auf Web Of Faith nicht. Die Lieder sind insgesamt noch eine Spur melodischer und eingängiger geworden, ohne auch nur die Bombastschiene ansatzweise zu streifen. So wild und ungestüm wie zu Zeiten des Debüts In Our World wird man die Band eher nicht mehr erleben, was aber anhand der songschreiberischen Klasse der letzten Alben nicht weiter schlimm ist. Powermetal mit knackigen, von großen Harmonien durchsetzten und mit furiosen Leads veredelten Riffs, treibende Rhythmen, die nicht generell straight ahead im Nähmaschinentakt bollern, sondern gerne auch mal den einen oder anderen Schnörkel offenbahren und den Klampfen einen soliden Nährboden zum Gedeihen schenken. Und über allem thront die vulominöse Stimme des sympathischen Kettenrauchers Pascal Cliche (der heißt wirklich so, das passt zur Musik), welche immer wieder mit der von Harry «The Tyrant» Conklin verglichen wird. Nun, das Volumen und das Timbre stimmen in etwa, Pascal jagt aber nicht unbedingt in die allerhöchsten Bereiche. Anyway, sehr charaktervoll nimmt er sich der Aufgabe des Frontmannes an und bedient im Gespann mit Patrick Gravel auch noch äußerst elegant seine Sechssaitige, entreißt ihr packendste Soli und zermalmend schwere Akkorde. Es gibt viele eingängig-melodische Parts (die das Gesamtbild nicht verwässern), aber auch einige eher progressiv-verspielte Elemente (die das Songmaterial aber nicht verkomplizieren) - und mit Between The Devil And The Deep Blue Sea und The Huntsman bedient man die Leute, die auf sich in der Intensität steigernde Power-Balladen stehen. Es ist mir schleierhaft, warum Bands wie HANKER noch nicht den Durchbruch geschafft haben. Sitzen die für das Signing von Bands verantwortlichen Label-Angestellten auf ihren Ohren? Zumindest Hellion Records pennen nicht und daher bringen wir eine wunderschöne Doppel LP, dreiseitig abspielbar mit zwei verschiedenen Vinylfarben, blau und klar in diesem Falle, sowie zwei Bonustracks vom 98er Ad Patres Demo, die in anderen Versionen zwar schon auf der Snakes And Ladders standen, was aber sicherlich keinen Fan der Band stören dürfte. Es geht hauptsächlich um das Web Of Faith Album, welches nun wie gewohnt mit schwerem Vinyl und fettem Cover die Herzen der Freaks in Brand stecken dürfte, die ihre LPs noch heiligsprechen mögen.

Auch hier kommen wieder emotionsgeladene Songs zum Tragen, die sich nach kurzer Zeit schon zu absoluten Hits entwickeln, sich in der Seele des Metalheads festkrallen und dabei dann zu keiner Sekunde an Reiz verlieren. Viel zu GEIL, um in dieser nicht gerade von Gerechtigkeit geprägten Metalwelt zugrunde zu gehen. Hanker haben echte Steherqualitäten bewiesen und das zahlt sich nun auch aus, nachdem sie auf dem Headbangers Open Air 2004 ihre Macht zeigen konnten. Wer auf eigenständigen, charakterstarken und dabei ganz traditionellen Powermetal steht, den erwartet hier ein absolut mitreißendes Hörvergnügen.

The Canadian Power Metal band Hanker exist since quite some years and with Web Of Faith they have released their fourth CD. Since their previous release, Snakes And Ladders (released in 2000), nothing has changed that much. Hanker is still playing an interesting mix of European Metal (Iron Maiden, Helloween, Primal Fear) and U.S. Power Metal (Iced Earth, Jag Panzer, Metal Church). Most of the songs on Web Of Faith are played full speed ahead, with powerful vocals from Pascal Cliche and always topped off with great harmonic guitar leads from Pascal and Patrick Gravel (which refer to Helloween and Maiden). There are also a few calmer songs on their new CD, and some songs have even some progressive metal influences (without using keyboards). For the moment, the only European country in which they are popular is Germany, but I hope that the rest of Europe will follow finally because these metal guys from Canada certainly deserve that! Web Of Faith is the fourth album from the Canadian metal band Hanker and the first recorded for Skyscraper Music. Four long years have passed since their last album Snakes And Ladders released in 2000. Was it worth the wait?

This 61 minutes opus begins in force with Empower, a solid fast song which treats of the 9/11 events. The next one is Inside Me, which begins with a great heavy riff. The best track of the album in my own opinion is Stigmata, with a Maiden-esque riff and superb melody in the chorus, an instant classic the first time I heard it! I love the way Pascal sings the chorus especially in the highest part at the end of the song where all the emotion is released!

Sincerely, there are no fillers on this 12 tracks release. My favourite songs are Empower, Inside Me, Stigmata, Do Or Die, Undercover Of Darkness and Point Of No Return. This is the first Hanker album without any keyboards. There are two very good metallic ballads titled Between The Devil And The Deep Blue Sea and The Huntsman, both melt very well with the other 10 tracks.

Musicianship-wise, Luc Guay did an astonishing job on the drums just like he did on Snakes And Ladders. For instance, his use of the china cymbal here and there is very efficient. He brings a lot to the songs by wonderfully varying his drum-play throughout the album. Luc is what the metal doctor ordered to treat the generic double bass drum disease! More specifically, check songs like Empower, Do Or Die, Undercover Of Darkness and Point Of No Return to see what I mean. The lead guitars department is once again one of the highlights for a Hanker album. Pascal and Patrick did some excellent guitar solos, a bit more aggressive than in the previous releases. Pascal did a great job on vocals with nice melody and feelings.

One of the main things where Hanker have improved a lot on this album is the production. Jean-François Dagenais from the death metal band Kataklysm produced Web Of Faith and gives the band an edge without taking away their traditional sound. I particularly appreciate the guitar sounds (distortion and acoustic). One little complaint however: Pascal's voice echoes a bit too much (as if he was singing in a hall), but the overall production is excellent and ahead of any previous Hanker release. I know that the band really dug their experience with Jean-François and I hope they will work with him again for future albums.

The Web Of Faith cover and booklet was done by David Faucher. The band has gone through many sketches before finally choosing this one. This computer generated cover is brilliant and represents the lyrical content of the album very well.

In conclusion, Web Of Faith was worth the wait. Hanker have kept their high class songwriting standard with this more than 60 minutes of pure heavy metal music. I've been listening to the album for more than half a year and it's been on my playlist ever since. Moreover, there are absolutely no fillers on this 12 tracks release. I'm not a die-hard fan for nothing, I've been digging this great band ever since their first studio album In Our World in 1994 and they keep going on to this day with their solid heavy metal without compromise. And thanks to Skyscraper Music, Hanker finally have suitable distribution and promotion. Highly recommended.

Four years after their latest roundabout blow Snakes And Ladders Canadian HANKER brings out their next fable epos. Again the band plays the best Power Metal you could hope for. The only negative point of the album is the a bit tame drum sound. But because of the magnificent compositions you can definitely look over that.

The songs are a bit more melodic and catchy than before, only even touching the bombast group. We will never experience the band as wild as on their debut In Our World, but if you look at the quality of the past albums, this is absolutely excusable. There are no fillers on this CD, but a whole lot of killers, with the hymn Between The Devil And The Deep Blue Sea with its chorus reminding me of old SAIGON KICK taking the crown.

As demanding Metalhead and especially fan of bands such as ARTCH, FIFTH ANGEL and co. you have to get this. The wide masses will not discover this small gem anyway, but who loves his music traditional, but never outdated, needs to buy this one. Essential album!!!

Und viel geändert, im Vergleich zum Vorgänger, hat sich auch auf Web Of Faith nicht. Wiederum spielt die Band den besten Power Metal, den man sich nur wünschen kann. Das einzige Ärgernis des Albums ist der etwas lasche Drumsound. Doch kann man darüber ob der großartigen Kompositionen gepflegt hinwegsehen.

Die Lieder sind insgesamt noch eine Spur melodischer und eingängiger geworden, ohne auch nur die Bombastschiene ansatzweise zu streifen. So wild und ungestüm wie zu Zeiten des Debüts In Our World wird man die Band eher nicht mehr erleben, was aber anhand der songschreiberischen Klasse der letzten Alben nicht weiter schlimm ist. Ausfälle gibt es auf der CD keine, Ausnahme-Songs jedoch in Hülle und Fülle, wobei die Hymne Between The Devil And The Deep Blue Sea mit seinem an alte SAIGON KICK erinnernden Refrain den unangefochtenen Höhepunkt darstellt.

Als anspruchsvoller Metaller und speziell solcher Bands wie ARTCH, FIFTH ANGEL und Co. muss man spätestens jetzt zugreifen. Der breiten Masse wird dieses Kleinod wohl auch weiterhin verborgen bleiben, aber wer seine heißgeliebte Musik gern traditionell, aber keineswegs ausgelutscht hören möchte, kommt hier kaum um einen Kauf herum. Pflichtalbum!!!

On this, their fourth CD, Quebec's HANKER have delivered a straight ahead power metal disc that, while it doesn't break any new ground for the genre, is a fairly enjoyable listen. Produced by fellow KATAKLYSM's Jean-François Dagenais, Web Of Faith features some massive drumming courtesy of skin-basher Luc Guay, and sing-a-long choruses that stick with the listener long after you've put the disc away. Just try and get the chorus to Let Me Out out of your head. In the past, HANKER have been compared to JAG PANZER, however on this outing, XYZ instantly comes to my mind with it's kind of late 80's feel.

The thick and beefy guitar riffing of Patrick Gravel shows a few of his influences throughout, with IRON MAIDEN being the most obvious. There is also a slight RAMMSTEIN (?!) feel to a couple of the chugging, opening riffs. While not copying anyone in particular, Gravel has developed a style that works well for each song. Man, this guy can play!

Overall, this is a good disc, though I do have a couple of issues with it. I must say that I'm not crazy about the vocals of Pascal Cliche. Not that he isn't a good singer, because he is. It's just that the performance here is a little monotone and uninspiring at times. As well, I could do without the boxy snare drum sound. Other than that, the production job of J-F Dagenais is a polished affair that stays on a straight course and has a comfortable feel to it, though the tunes may be a little darker in lyrical content than most in the power metal genre.

HANKER are not going to break into the mainstream consciousness of the record-buying public with Web Of Faith, but what they have done is create a good power metal album that pays respect to their various influences. If you are a fan of HANKER, then you will absolutely like this disc. If you're not a fan, it probably won't win you over.

Hanker is a band from Quebec, Canada and exist since 1985. I already own their Snakes And Ladders and their The Dead Ringer albums and was very surprised by their live-performance during last year Headbangers Open Air in Germany! On stage, the band sounds much more progressive and professional than they do on vinyl. The same comment I have about their latest release Web Of Faith. For people who want to listen to Hanker for the first time, this album will sound pretty standard but with a mix of power/progressive elements. Some of the songs have a high sing-a-long level. Nevertheless, the band has some great musicians and some very good, progressive songs. The only little complain is the moderate production. To compare this band with another band is very difficult; think about an older style of Jag Panzer (but not with such a great singer as Harry Conklin), the older Riot stuff and even sometimes Helloween & Iron Maiden. After listening several times to this album, I concluded that this is in spite of it, their best album so far. Favourite songs: Empower, The Search, Face To Face.

Straight out of the gates with lead off track Empower, this Quebec quartet sets the stage for an unrelenting power metal feast. The past comparisons to Jag Panzer are again warranted, as main man Pascal Cliche is a vocal dead ringer for Harry of JP. This is their fourth full-length and first with Skyscraper. Great riffs, vocals are bang on, and lyrically this is their best yet. Produced by Kataklysm guitarist Jean-François Dagenais, the result is a tight, yet accessible 12 tracks, with the expected heaviness complemented by great melodicism. Although not a concept record, each track lyrically revisits the theme of the relationship between life and afterlife. Best track here is the uptempo Let Me Out, which reminds me of Helloween's I Want Out. Highly regarded overseas, this should be the release to give Hanker some well-deserved recognition on this side of the Atlantic.

Seit langem überfällig, jetzt isses endlich da: Web Of Faith, das erste HANKER-Album seit fünf Jahren. Und die gute Form der Kanadier, die sich auf dem Headbangers Open Air andeutete, bestätigt sich auch mit CD Nummer vier. Stilistisch hat sich dabei nix geändert - nach wie vor regiert mächtiger, hymnenhafter Power Metal ohne Kitsch, der die übliche Gefolgschaft von Göttern wie Jag Panzer oder Metal Church sofort in den kollektiven Bang-Wahn treiben sollte. Ausfälle gibt's keine, die Produktion von Jean-François Dagenais (Kataklysm) könnte vor allem im Drumbereich 'ne Spur druckvoller sein, dafür stimmen Cover, Booklet und die Spielzeit von 61 Minuten, die man ohne Langweilerparts füllen kann. Μετά το 8 Deadly Sins των Manticora, το Web Of Faith των Hanker είναι ό,τι πιο αξιόλογο και σεβαστό έχω ακούσει όσον αφορά τον Power Metal ήχο τους τελευταίους μήνες. Οι καναδοί μετά από τέσσερα χρόνια αναμονής μας παρουσιάζουν το νέο τους δίσκο, ο οποίος ναι μέν έχει στοιχεία από τις ρίζες του συγκροτήματος αλλά παράλληλα θυμίζει πολύ Iron Maiden meets Helloween. Το αποτέλεσμα δν είναι καθόλου άσχημο αλλά αντίθετα ο δίσκος αυτός μπορεί να λατρευτεί από οπαδούς του κλασικού Heavy / Power Metal. Τα κιθαριστικά riffs πραγματικά σου παίρνουν το μυαλό και εξαιτίας της καταπληκτικής παραγωγής θές να ακούς και να ξανακούς το δίσκο για αρκετό καιρό. Κάτι που προσωπικά μου άρεσε στη δουλειά αυτή είναι το ότι μέσα στο δίσκο δεν υπάρχει ούτε νότα από πλήκτρα και αυτό είναι πολύ καλό, αφού σήμερα όλα τα Power Metal συγκροτήματα έχουν γεμίσει τις συνθέσεις τους με πλήκτρα που τις περισσότερες φορές είναι ανούσια και άσχημα. Ο ήχος της κιθάρας είναι πάρα πολύ όμορφος όχι μόνο στα ρυθμικά σημεία αλλά και στα lead. Τώρα, όσον αφορά τα τύμπανα, κάποιοι δεν έμειναν πολύ ευχαριστημένοι με τον ήχο αλλά εγώ δεν πρόσεξα κάτι σε αυτά που θα μπορούσε να χαρακτηριστεί άσχημο και να χαλάσει τα κομμάτια. Στο Web Of Faith οι Hanker βρήκαν το προσωπικό τους στύλ και μάλλον αυτό θα ακολουθούν και για τα επόμενα χρόνια. Θα ακούσετε κομμάτια τα οποία αποτελούνται από πολλές μελωδίες, άλλες περισσότερο μελαγχολικές και άλλες γρήγορες και στις δύο περιπτώσεις θα γουστάρετε το ίδιο. Οι φίλοι του Heavy / Power Metal να βρούν και να ακούσουν το δίσκο αυτό. Πιστεύω πως δεν θα βρούν κάτι που θα τους απογοητεύσει.

Soupir... Ça n'a pas de sens. Le drum y varge. La bass a pète. Les guitares sonnent comme si les gars grattaient les cordes avec une lame de rasoir. La production est A1. J-F Dagenais (Kataklysm) a fait une vraie job de pro là-dessus. Chaque musicien s'est dépassé et ça paraît. La pochette, au concept actuel, donne la teinte d'un album qui, encore une fois, renferme des textes s'inspirant des contextes sociaux et des situations de la vie courante, traitant de thèmes tant personnels qu'universels soutenus par une mélodie à la hauteur des plus grands. Mentionnons les incroyables rythmes écorcheurs sur The Search, genre de chanson qui te rappelle des souvenirs la première fois que tu l'entends. Seulement deux ballades (au son incroyablement lourd et metal) sont au rendez-vous, entourées par dix autres pièces d'enfer pour un total de plus d'une heure. Un tour de force d'une puissance surprenante. Des textes qui touchent le plus commun des mortels et qui n'ont rien à envier à toutes ces insipides féeries dragonesques aux licornes enculées par des elfes de la forêt enchantée. Du vrai beat d'acier! Des refrains à chanter avec nos gants de cuir cloutés, le poing bien en l'air. Ressortons nos vestes de jeans à manches coupées bourrées de patchs et savourons un de ces bijoux qui fait que le metal passe à travers l'âge et ne mourra jamais. Pour tous ceux qui découvriront Hanker, les redécouvriront ou tout simplement, seront ravis pas cette nouvelle page d'une formidable aventure qui nous aura fait brasser la tête depuis vingt ans déjà. Heavy metal is the law!

Ahhhh, Hanker. At long last they've got a real production job by a for-real metal producer, and this has all the hallmarks of a breakthrough album. I'm taking my life in my hands writing this, as this here is our webmaster's fave band. And while I don't have much bad to say about this, I'm not raving either.

Well, this is no Dead Ringer, but I just have to accept that Hanker have moved away from that style, and they aren't coming back. So this is another album in the Iron Maiden/old Helloween vein of Snakes And Ladders, and it is a definite step up. For one, the band finally has a really good guitar tone and a pro-sounding mix, which punches the album up a notch and gives it real crunch. You really can't argue with the guitarwork on this CD, as it is really just excellent. There are some killer riffs and harmonic leads on every song. And as always, there are no fucking keyboards to dilute the metal. Most of the tunes here are midpaced, and I think a certain lack of variety in tempo hurts the album a bit, as most of the songs are at pretty much the same speed, which makes them tend to blur together on a casual listen. Some folks have complained about the drum sound, but I guess I'm not a nitpicker about drums, as I really didn't notice anything bad about it. The snare is a little clickety in places, but not unless you are listening for it.

My real beef with this album is on the vocals. And not because Pascal is a bad singer, as I know damned well from previous albums that he is really good. But the vocal lines on Web Of Faith are only rarely exciting. Stigmata has some good bits, and The Huntsman has a catchy chorus, but overall these vocal melodies are just not that memorable. They also have a Maidenesque tendency to repeat the chorus too much, so that even the good ones get stale, as on Inside Me, Let Me Out and Point Of No Return. Even this could be overcome, but Pascal just doesn't sing like he means it on this CD. He sounds kind of bored, and the recording on the vocals is way back in the mix and sounds hollow and thin, so it just kind of enervates the whole performance.

So I like this CD, and for old-fashioned Heavy Metal fans this is a worthy purchase, but I just know Hanker can do better than this. I know they are not going to go back to their older sound and produced anything as weird and cool as The Dead Ringer again, but if they are wanting a more commercial sound (which I certainly do not blame them for), they need more variety between songs, more catchy vocal hooks, and a production job that doesn't make the vocals sound like they were recorded in a shower stall. Fortunately, this is worth it for the stellar guitars alone.

Eine ordentliche Kelle Metal gefällig? Dann empfiehlt ihnen ihr Arzt und Quacksalber ganz dringend die neue HANKER. Gerne auch rezeptfrei. Es ist auf jeden Fall eine Wohltat, mal wieder völlig reinrassigen Heavy Metal zu hören, ohne die ganzen Bombast-/oder Kreuzüber-Orgien, die in letzter Zeit immer mehr zu einer Verwässerung unserer heißgeliebten Musik führen. HANKER, schon seit Jahren tief im Underground verwurzelt, bollern auch auf ihrer neuen Scheibe Web Of Faith ehrliche und bodenständige Mucke, so dass man die Entstehung der Stücke auch locker in den Achtzigern vermuten könnte. Zeitlos nennt man das wohl. Schon auf ihrem Debüt-Album In Our World (1994) wurden die Mannen aus dem Land des Ahorns gerne mit JAG PANZER verglichen, was ich in all den Jahren nur sehr bedingt nachvollziehen konnte. Pascal Cliche's Stimme ist sehr kraftvoll, aber nicht mit der von Harry Conklin zu verwechseln, und dass beide Gruppen Power Metal spielen, ist nun auch nicht so außergewöhnlich! HANKER klingen schlicht und ergreifend wie HANKER. Genialer Vergleich, ich weiß. Und Dank des Durchhaltevermögens der Band kommen wir nun in den Genuss von neuen, starken Metal-Songs wie Empower (schneller Opener) oder Let Me Out (sehr eingängig). HANKER spielen frei von der Leber weg und scheren sich weiterhin einen feuchten Kehricht um aktuelle Strömungen, soviel ist klar. Gitarrist Patrick Gravel hat sicherlich die alte Schule des Metal's durchlaufen und sorgt mit zahlreichen, treffsicheren Riffs für helle Freude bei allen Verfechtern des wahren Glaubens (ein wenig Pathos darf doch sein, oder?). Die Produktion ist in Ordnung, wird aber dem starken Song-Material nur bedingt gerecht, da ein wenig mehr Druck den Stücken ganz bestimmt nicht geschadet hätte. Doch auch so sind The Search (treibender Banger), Between The Devil And The Deep Blue Sea (Halbballade) oder Face To Face (heavy und melodiös) formidable Treffer, die keinen Old-Schooler enttäuschen sollten... HANKER-Fans sowieso nicht. Schön, dass die Kanadier weiterhin unter uns weilen und der Heavy Metal-Szene ein wenig vom Spirit und Idealismus der vergangenen Tage zurückbringen. Fazit: Web Of Faith ist extrem unterstützenswert, genauso wie die beiden Vorgänger The Dead Ringer (1997) und Snakes And Ladders (2000). Beziehen könnt ihr das Teil über Hellion Records.

Unter www.hellionrecords.de können Metalheads den neuesten Streich der Power-Metal-Formation Hanker erwerben. Nach Snakes And Ladders gibt es auf dem Nachfolger Web Of Faith erneut die Vollbedienung der Heavy-Veteranen aus Quebec in Kanada. 1985 gegründet, haben sich Hanker durch ihre Scheiben und die Live-Performance über all die Zeit einen guten Namen erspielt, den sie anno 2004 nachhaltig unterstreichen. Mit Inside Me, Stigmata, Face To Face oder dem Titeltrack sowie acht weiteren Schüttlern, die es in sich haben. Doch trotz aller Härte gehen Hanker nie kompromißlos und nach dem Motto «voll auf die Fresse» zur Sache. Geknüppel ist nicht ihr Markenzeichen, denn als Einflüsse geben die vier neben Metal Church, Black Sabbath, Judas Priest oder Iron Maiden auch Akteure wie Rush, Styx oder Genesis an. Davon hört man auf Web Of Faith zwar nur noch sehr selten was, aber auch ein paar NWOBHM-Elemente sind ab und an zu vernehmen.

Oeuvrant dans le domaine heavy/power metal traditionnel, ce groupe québécois, Hanker, revient en 2004 avec leur nouvel album, Web Of Faith. Il s'agit de leur quatrième album studio, donc on s'aperçoit rapidement qu'ils ont acquis de l'expérience en la matière. C'est Jean-François Dagenais de Kataklysm qui a produit l'album et nous remarquons assez facilement qu'il y a un manque de finition au niveau de l'intégration de la voix de Pascal Cliche et des back vocal. C'est quelque peu dommage, parce que nous avons un son très bien maîtrisé, une bonne énergie, mais la voix n'a pas été assez intégrée pour aider à projeter celle-ci.

Si on se concentre un peu plus sur la musique, nous avons à faire face à un son très entraînant, comme c'est le cas pour les pièces Inside Me et Stigmata. Ils ont une belle faculté à apporter de la variation d'une chanson à l'autre et des refrains accrocheurs. Une des très bonnes pièces de l'album est sans aucun doute Let Me Out. Le rythme est excellent et la guitare donne de la puissance à la pièce et le tout va en harmonie pour mener au refrain. Pour celle-ci, on semble remarquer que la voix de Pascal a été intégrée de meilleur façon et on voit vite le résultat, c'est cet aspect qu'il manque à certains endroits sur Web Of Faith, qui aurait donné beaucoup plus de force à l'opus.

Do Or Die continue dans la même veine que la précédente, un autre très bon morceau du groupe. Avec Between The Devil And The Deep Blue Sea, nous arrivons à la fameuse ballade, mais bon, c'est difficile de réinventer ce type-ci de chanson. Under Cover Of Darkness et Face To Face s'écoutent également très bien. On peut remarquer un riff vraiment familier à la Iron Maiden dans Face To Face par moments.

Web Of Faith est un bon album, mais il s'agit d'un heavy/power metal traditionnel, un plus vers le heavy avec cet opus, et il faut avouer que ce n'est pas ce qu'il y a de plus facile aller dans cette voie. Il y a vraiment des excellentes pièces sur l'album, mais encore une fois, l'intégration de la voix de Pascal est en quelque sorte le fait marquant de Web Of Faith. Le potentiel aurait été encore plus grand s'il y aurait eu plus de finition. Les mélodies et les riffs sont très intéressants, et le vocal également, mais il manque un petit quelque chose dans la clarté qui coûte un peu au mérite que l'album aurait pu avoir. Les chansons à écouter sont Let Me Out, Under Cover Of Darkness et The Huntsman. C'est un album que vous allez encore plus apprécier après plusieurs écoute. Il reste des ajustements à apporter au groupe, mais ils ont un excellent contrôle des instruments, une belle maturité au niveau du son, des refrains accrocheurs et un son diversifié, alors il n'y a pas à s'inquiéter sur leur futur.

Hell yes, finally a new sign of life from Canada. After four long years Hanker finally managed to record the follow-up to Snakes And Ladders. Because of the long time past I was afraid of a change in their musical direction for there were numerous bad surprises in the past. But not at all!! Same band members and the consequent continuation of the predecessor. Sounds boring but that's what we want to hear, isn't it? I personally am very glad to enjoy good music for almost one hour playing-time without being in danger of getting a heart attack. So don't hesitate and get it while it's hot.

Hell yes, doch wieder ein Lebenszeichen aus Kanada. HANKER haben es nach 4 Jahren endlich geschafft, einen Nachfolger zu Snakes And Ladders einzuzimmern. Nach so einer langen Zeit hat man so seine Bedenken, dass eventuell ein Stielwechsel vollzogen wurde. Solche Überraschungen hatten wir ja bei etlichen Bands schon öfters erlebt. Aber Pustekuchen. Alte Besetzung und konsequente Fortsetzung des oben erwähnten Silberlings. Klingt vielleicht langweilig, aber wir wollen es doch so. Oder!? Ich bin jedenfalls froh, dass ich entspannt eine gute Stunde mit der Mucke abhängen kann ohne dabei einen Herzkasper zu bekommen. Also nicht lange warten und das Teil abgreifen.

Es ist mir schleierhaft, warum Bands wie HANKER noch nicht den Durchbruch geschafft haben. Sitzen die für das Signing von Bands verantwortlichen Label-Angestellten auf ihren Ohren? Die kanadische Kombo (die Headliner des diesjährigen Headbangers Open Air) existiert seit 1985 und veröffentlichte bisher drei «full length»-Alben. Das letzte - Snakes And Ladders - erschien bereits im November 2000 und ich habe keine Ahnung, warum es bis zur Veröffentlichung dieser Scheibe so dermaßen lange gedauert hat. Web Of Faith (versehen mit einem wirklich hübschen Artwork aus der Feder von David Faucher) enthält zwölf Songs, die von Jean-François Dagenais (u.a. MALEVOLENT CREATION) nicht nur produziert und gemischt wurden, sondern die von ihm ein wirklich fettes Soundgewand verpasst bekamen. Ganz grob könnte man Songs wie Empower in dieselbe melodische Power Metal-Schublade stecken, in der sich bereits Bands wie (alte) HELLOWEEN oder GAMMA RAY befinden. Aber man sollte die Musik des Vierers nicht mit dem Etikett «Happy Metal» versehen, denn dafür klingt Sänger Pascal Cliche viel zu kräftig (ganz nebenbei erwähnt, erinnert er auch noch etwas an JAG PANZERs Harry Conklin, singt nur nicht ganz so hoch). Inside Me klingt ähnlich, kann aber einen gewissen JUDAS PRIEST-Einfluss nicht leugnen. Let Me Out könnte ich mir auch einer PRIMAL FEAR-Scheibe vorstellen, während The Search, Point Of No Return, Under Cover Of Darkness oder der Titeltrack keinem Fan von ICED EARTH, JAG PANZER oder IRON MAIDEN missfallen dürften/sollten. Es gibt viele eingängig-melodische Parts (die das Gesamtbild nicht verwässern), aber auch einige eher progressiv-verspielte Elemente (die das Songmaterial aber nicht verkomplizieren) - und mit Between The Devil And The Deep Blue Sea und The Huntsman bedient man die Leute, die auf sich in der Intensität steigernde Power-Balladen stehen. Alles in allem ein Album, dass seine Käufer finden wird und das für 15,50 Euro (plus Porto/Verpackung) bei Hellion Records erhältlich ist.

We have finally had to wait four years since Snakes And Ladders to get a new opus from our power metal Quebecker veterans and the wait was all worth it. Web Of Faith is their fourth album and contains a good vintage of titles that will certainly animate the crowds during their upcoming tour. Let's begin with Empower relating the September 11 events and mainly the thirst for vengeance that has veiled the freedom of all throughout the planet. From then on, we denote an influence à la Helloween on the sound and the guitar playing but it is only temporary. HANKER has already found their own style throughout the years remaining faithful to the roots of the traditional power heavy metal.

HANKER have polished up well their new material which results in a good concentration of powerful and varied titles such as Stigmata, The Search, Face To Face and Web Of Faith which will certainly satisfy their legion of fans. Another deserving fact is the constant evolution that our Quebecers have shown during their career making Web Of Faith one of the best albums of their discography. Note that Jean-François Dagenais' production (Kataklysm) has corrected the gap of the last albums offering so a much more powerful sound at the height of their compositions.

HANKER, who is recently signed to the label Skyscraper, have in their hands the album that should widen its fame worldwide. A must for all fans of power heavy metal since its insertion.

Il aura fallu attendre quatre ans depuis Snakes And Ladders pour avoir un nouvel opus de nos vétérans québécois de power métal et l'attente en valait la peine. Web Of Faith est leur quatrième album et contient une bonne cuvée de titres qui animera certainement les foules lors de leur prochaine tournée. À commencer avec Empower qui relate les événements du 11 septembre et principalement la soif de vengeance qui est venue voiler la liberté de tous à l'échelle de la planète. Dès lors, on dénote une influence à la Helloween sur le son et le jeu des guitares mais ce n'est que passager. HANKER ont déjà trouvé leur propre style au cours des années demeurant fidèle aux racines du power heavy métal traditionnel.

HANKER ont bien fignolé leur nouveau matériel ce qui résulte en une bonne concentration de titres puissants et variés tels Stigmata, The Search, Face To Face et Web Of Faith qui sauront satisfaire leur légion de fans. Autre fait digne de mention est la constante évolution que nos Québécois ont su démontrer au cours de leur carrière faisant de Web Of Faith un des meilleurs albums de leur discographie. Noter que la production de Jean-François Dagenais (Kataklysm) est venue corriger la lacune des derniers albums offrant ainsi un son beaucoup plus puissant et à la hauteur de leurs compositions.

HANKER, qui est nouvellement signé au label Skyscraper, a entre ses mains l'album qui devrait étendre sa notoriété à l'échelle mondiale. À conseiller à tous les fans de power heavy métal depuis son insertion.

Mensch, auf der neuen Hanker sind mal wieder ein paar richtig geile Sachen drauf! Web Of Faith bietet einmal mehr jede Menge Stoff wie wir ihn von den Kanadiern gewohnt sind: traditionell und mit einem großen Gespür für Melodien. Da wäre beispielsweise das großartige Between The Devil And The Deep Blue Sea, das einen Spannungsbogen an den Tag legt wie ihn höchstens Savatage in ihren besten Tagen schreiben konnten. Oder das schnellere Let Me Out, das sich mit seinem einfachen Refrain direkt in den Gehörgängen der Hörer festsetzt. Eine tolle Nummer ist auch Face To Face geworden, das ebenfalls von seiner Melodik lebt, die einfach Hanker-typisch zu einem großen Anteil von Sänger Pascal Cliche getragen wird und immer wieder aufs neue zu faszinieren weiß. Am stärksten finde ich aber das melancholisch-angehauchte Stigmata. Hanker bedeutet übersetzt ja so viel wie «sich nach etwas sehnen», und wenn es einen Hanker-Song gibt, der dieses Gefühl zu 100 Prozent widerspiegelt, dann ist es Stigmata. Hört Euch das Lied an, und ihr wißt, was diese Band Euch sagen will. Point Of No Return erinnert mich aufgrund seines sich ständig wiederholenden «On the Edge» die ganze Zeit an Maiden zur Bayley-Zeit (Man On The Edge, nur für die gänzlich unwissenden - der Verfasser), und dann ist da auch noch die traurig-bombastische Ballade The Huntsman, bei der mir immer und immer wieder Royal Hunts «Far Away» in den Sinn kommt. Vielleicht bilde ich mir diese ganzen Assoziationen ja lediglich aufgrund der Songtitel ein? Nein, nein, das ist schon so, und neben den erwähnten Stücken bewegt sich auch der größte Teil des übrigen Songmaterials auf diesem Album hier ohne Frage weit über dem Standard, der von heutigen Bands erwartet werden kann.

Alles beim alten also im Hause Hanker? Nicht ganz. Web Of Faith ist einen Tick weit rifforientierter und vielleicht auch härter geworden als das ältere Hanker-Material. Vielleicht liegt's daran, daß der Anteil der melodischen Soli ein klein wenig zurückgeschraubt wurde. Aber große Auswirkungen hat dies ohnehin nicht, weshalb Web Of Faith ohne wenn und aber genauso ans Herz eines jeden aufrechten Bangers gelegt werden kann wie auch schon sämtliche Vorgängerwerke. 15,50 Euro gehen an Hellion Records.

Fidèle à l'école traditionnelle d'Iron Maiden, de Judas Priest, Hanker à travers Web Of Faith réaffirme leur allégeance inconditionnelle au genre. Empower, Inside Me, Stigmata dès le départ donnent le ton; vocal fluide, puissance, drive rythmique et solos enflammés, avec un aura manifestement gothique. Le son est limpide, cristallin, quoique la définition laisse parfois à désirer. L'album offre un programme d'une heure, cohérent, avec redites ou essoufflement; ce sera selon.

Welche Songs der neuen Scheibe Hanker bereits bei ihrem Killergig auf dem diesjährigen Headbangers Open Air live zum Besten gegeben haben, dass kann ich aufgrund der unglücklichen Kombination meines eh schon nicht gerade überragenden Gedächtnisses mit jeder Menge Bieren beim besten Willen nicht mehr nachvollziehen... ich weiß nur noch, dass sie neben Klassikern wie Bloodbath In Heaven, You Won't Live Eternally und Far From The Cradle auch zwei oder drei Stücke der damals noch nicht veröffentlichten aktuellen Langrille Web Of Faith präsentiert haben und dass diese völlig reingeknallt und selbst zwischen den Hammertracks der ersten drei Alben eine absolut super Figur abgegeben haben. Von daher bin ich auch gleich mit nicht gerade niedrigen Erwartungen an die neue Hanker rangegangen und diese wurden auch absolut nicht enttäuscht! Denn Web Of Faith ist schlicht und einfach genau das Album geworden, dass man sich als Hanker-Fan auch gewünscht hat, denn von irgendwelchen sound- und songtechnischen Experimenten, Versuchen oder Neuerungen ist die kompletten 61 Minuten über absolut nichts zu sehen und zu hören und man besinnt sich vielmehr auf das, was man eh am besten kann, nämlich das schreiben von mächtigen, packenden Classic Metal-Hymnen in bester Jag Panzer, Breaker, Metal Church und Iron Maiden Tradition!! Mal lässt man's treibend angehen wie bei dem Banger Let Me Out, mal stimmt man ruhigere Klänge an wie bei der Powerballade Between The Devil And The Deep Blue Sea und mal lässt man's richtig krachen wie bei dem Riffmonster Face To Face, aber egal wofür sich die vier Kanadier auch entscheiden, sie zocken ihren oldschool Metal immer überirdisch gut und lassen den das Album durchziehenden roten Faden nie vermissen! Für diejenigen unter euch, die sich eh schon Hanker-Fans schimpfen ist Web Of Faith sowieso oberste Pflicht, aber auch alle anderen Freunde von traditionellen 80er Klängen kommen hieran definitiv nicht vorbei!! Die guten alten Hanker sind zurück. Naja, so alt sind sie noch nicht, haben vor gut zehn Jahren erst ihr geniales Debütalbum In Our World auf den Markt gebracht. Dies hier ist inzwischen ihre vierte Scheibe und es hat sich in der Tat nichts geändert an ihrer Marschrichtung. Powermetal mit knackigen, von großen Harmonien durchsetzten und mit furiosen Leads veredelten Riffs, treibende Rhythmen, die nicht generell straight ahead im Nähmaschinentakt bollern, sondern gerne auch mal den einen oder anderen Schnörkel offenbahren und den Klampfen einen soliden Nährboden zum Gedeihen schenken. Und über allem thront die vulominöse Stimme des sympathischen Kettenrauchers Pascal Cliche (der heißt wirklich so, das passt zur Musik), welche immer wieder mit der von Harry «The Tyrant» Conklin verglichen wird. Nun, das Volumen und das Timbre stimmen in etwa, Pascal jagt aber nicht unbedingt in die allerhöchsten Bereiche. Anyway, sehr charaktervoll nimmt er sich der Aufgabe des Frontmannes an und bedient im Gespann mit Patrick Gravel auch noch äußerst elegant seine Sechssaitige, entreißt ihr packendste Soli und zermalmend schwere Akkorde. Tja, die Kompositionen an sich sind derweil ebenso eingängig wie komplex arrangiert. Eine Kunst, die nur wenigen Bands zueigen ist. Hanker sind so eine Truppe, die sich zwar stilistisch nie wirklich verändert, doch mit jedem neuen Album absolut frisch klingt. Auch hier kommen wieder emotionsgeladene Songs zum Tragen, die sich nach kurzer Zeit schon zu absoluten Hits entwickeln, sich in der Seele des Metalheads festkrallen und dabei dann zu keiner Sekunde an Reiz verlieren. Viel zu GEIL, um in dieser nicht gerade von Gerechtigkeit geprägten Metalwelt zugrunde zu gehen. Hanker haben echte Steherqualitäten bewiesen und das zahlt sich nun auch aus, nachdem sie auf dem Headbangers Open Air 2004 ihre Macht zeigen konnten. Wer auf eigenständigen, charakterstarken und dabei ganz traditionellen Powermetal steht, den erwartet hier ein absolut mitreißendes Hörvergnügen. 15,50 Euro bei www.hellionrecords.de.

Die alten Haudegen von HANKER gibt es jetzt schon seit fast zwanzig Jahren und sie haben ihre musikalischen Wurzeln definitiv in den achtziger Jahren gesät. Das macht schon mal der Opener ihrer neuen Scheibe Web Of Faith, Empower, überaus deutlich. Metal mit richtig viel Power und richtig viel Melodie ist der nächsten knappen Stunde angesagt, wenn die Jungs aus Quebec City mit der Dampframme ausholen. Als Mischling alter HELLOWEEN und BRUCE DICKINSONs Soloprojekt kann man HANKER ganz gut beschreiben, wobei sich mehr als nur einmal eine gehörige Portion JAG PANZER beimischt.

Auch der schwer rockende Nachfolger Inside Me kickt keinen Deut schwächer und hat jede Menge zündender Ideen am Start, die von doppelläufigen Klampfen bis hin zu feinen zweistimmigen Vocals alles formidabel beinhalten, was die melodikliebende Seele eines Metallers höher schlagen lässt. Richtig hymnisch wird es mit Stigmata, das selbst die Großmeister des Melodic Power Metal - HELLOWEEN - nicht besser hinbekommen hätten. Stakkatotapping und die relaxt treibende Doublebass machen aus dem Song in Verbindung mit dem ultrahymnischen Refrain das erste Highlight des Albums.

Aber Zeit zum Verschnaufen kriegt man deswegen noch lange nicht. Let Me Out setzt genau an jenen hymnischen Synapsen an und pumpt die akustische Wohltat unablässig durch die Nervenbahnen. Manchmal klingt Sänger Pascal Cliche dabei nicht eben sattelfest und überhaupt gibt er sicher nicht den prototypischen Frontmann einer Power-Metal-Combo ab. Dazu hat er eigentlich zu wenig Kraft in der Röhre und singt auch einige Tonlagen zu tief. Aber gerade diese Tatsache finde ich besonders lobenswert, da sich seine Stimme wie für HANKER gemacht in den hypermelodischen Songstrukturen wiegt und dabei trotz allen nicht wegzudiskutierenden Schwächen eine super Figur macht. Sattelfestigkeit hin oder her. Der Mann klingt in meinen Ohren geil und passt wunderbar zur Musik HANKERs, basta!

Das schwer an alte Metalhelden wie IRON MAIDEN angelehnte und episch arrangierte Do Or Die pulsiert mit schwirrenden Sechzehntelanschlägen und den kickenden Drums sauber durch die Speaker, offenbart sich aber nicht so schnell wie seine Vorgänger. Man muss die Nummer einige Male mehr hören. Dann aber erschließt sie sich einem selbstredend. Between The Devil And The Deep Blue Sea schlägt balladeske Töne an und das mit verdammter Gänsehautgarantie. Langsam aber stetig steigert sich die Nummer in einen mächtigen Hymnenchorus, der sofort noch einmal gehört werden muss. Und noch mal und noch mal...Brett!

The Search könnte blind auf einer alten JAG PANZER-Scheibe stehen, wobei Pascals Gesang natürlich nicht an Harry Conklins Fabelröhre ranreicht. Ansonsten fehlt es aber an nichts. US-Power-Metal in starker Form, ohne Wenn und Aber. Under Cover Of Darkness hämmert ohne Unterlass und lässt Querverweise zum Songwriting eines Roy Z. zu, der schon mehr als eine Genregröße wieder auf Kurs brachte. Kein Wunder, mit so einem starken musikalischen Output trifft man eben den Geschmack der traditionellen Masse blind. Und auch wenn das etwas sperrigere Face To Face anfangs etwas Toleranz benötigt, da es schon fast in die uralte RUNNING WILD-Ecke driftet, beinhaltet die Nummer ebenfalls absolutes Growerpotenzial. Nicht ganz so hymnisch wie der Rest aber dafür mit jeder Menge Härte angereichert. Sollte doch auch reichen?

Point Of No Return mixt einmal mehr HELLOWEEN und BRUCE DICKINSON und macht dabei logischerweise eine prima Figur. Die Musik wirkt weder anbiedernd noch angestaubt und lässt sich einfach nur ohne Anstrengung hören. Wie auch das düstere und stille The Huntsman, das langsam die Weiten der Trommelfelle erobert und das besetzte Gebiet mit melodischen Giftgasen pulverisiert. Der Abschuss blüht dem Hörer aber letztendlich mit dem wahrhaft epischen Titeltrack, der über sieben Minuten lang mit ausschweifender Metallgewalt attackiert und immer wieder IRON MAIDEN und BLAZE zitiert. Ein super Abschluss für eine CD, die ich gleich noch einmal hören werde. Oder am besten zweimal...

Der Sound auf Web Of Faith geht völlig in Ordnung, wobei er mir zu typisch amerikanisch klingt. Heißt, dass mir persönlich etwas der Biss und die Transparenz fehlt, obwohl der Arsch deutlich vorhanden ist. Das liebevoll aufgemachte Artwork mit seiner Futureschlagseite rundet das starke HANKER-Album ab und lässt mich die Scheibe der Power-Metal-Fraktion, sei sie nun amerikanisch oder europäisch geprägt, empfehlen.

Don't worry, you haven't entered a parallel universe. I, of all people, have given a less than perfect score to a Hanker album. And tomorrow hell will be freezing over. Is it a matter of me having grown more critical with time (age? ) or is it the remote possibility that I might actually not like something on the album? Well, it's a bit of both actually. OK, enough blabbering and on with the review. This is the long-awaited fourth album from these Canadian heavy metallers and in short, it was well worth the wait. They're now finally on a solid label and Web Of Faith is their first album produced by a metal producer, in a studio with experience in metal recordings. The album was produced by Jean-François Dagenais, guitarist for Montreal-based death metal band Kataklysm. I find overall he did a great job, especially with the guitar sound which is much better than on the previous albums. Things are not so great with the drum sound, however. At times it has this little «clickety» sound that one usually finds mostly on death metal albums. It's not the end of the world, it's not everywhere, but I find that a bit distracting although after several listens I've managed to phase it out when listening to the album. But definitely not a sound I'm used to hearing on a heavy metal album.

I might as well get rid right away of the one other thing that bothers me a bit and it's still drum related (hmmm... I think Luc will hit me the next time I see him. ) Again, that's only here and there but most importantly during the otherwise excellent song The Search. During the chorus the use of the drum is... Er.. Well.. Here's my reaction when I first heard it (and still to this day): «What the hell is this?» This little part reminded me immediately of a drum part I bitched about when I reviewed the first Forgotten Tales album. I don't know, that thing just bothers me. There's a bit on the same in Do Or Die as well. And there you have it, for an album that lasts over 60 minutes I'm bitching only about a minute or two and now I can switch to fanboy mode.

Even though I still have a thing for The Dead Ringer as my favourite Hanker album (first-album-purchased syndrome?), I must say that Web Of Faith is without question their most accomplished work to date. Musically and lyrically, this is undeniably Hanker - top notch songwriting and playing, emotion-filled music, intelligent lyrics and goddamn those guitar solos are catchy as ever. I won't orphan the «intelligent lyrics» comment this time: The album opener, Empower, was inspired by the September 11 terrorist attacks in the United States. There's been quite a few metal songs inspired by that but of all the ones I've seen, I think I can safely say this one has the most mature lyrics of all - rather than some reactionary revenge stuff or some whiny «whyyyy?» kind of lyrics (Shaffer, I'm looking in your direction.) Hanker took a more «generalised» and laid back approach and managed to express anger, disbelief and sadness without sounding like angry school kids or retarded CNN couch potatoes. Er... I got a little carried away here. I don't want to go on a song-by-song basis as it would then be quicker for you to go buy the album than to finish reading the review. Suffice it to say that Hanker made part of their name with the quality of their lyrics and they're delivering the goods once again.

The album is overall more aggressive and maybe a bit darker theme-wise than the previous albums, although the Hanker sound and style is still instantly recognisable. There's a similar balance of rockers and «power ballads» as in the previous albums (two out of twelve tracks), and even if you're not too much into power ballads, the great guitar parts will help you get through them. Overall the songs are kept relatively short - most are below or barely above 5 minutes in length except for Face To Face and the epic-sounding title track. While mostly a collection of «traditional heavy metal», like in Snakes And Ladders there's also a couple of more power metal-ish songs in there with a sound closer to American power metal rather than the happy Euro power metal (yeah, I know, they're not all happy-sounding bands over there, but you get the idea. )

Overall Web Of Faith shows evolution on the part of the band without sacrificing their signature sound: It's different but it's still Hanker. Those who might have found their previous material a bit too «tame» for their taste might want to check this one out. Fans of the previous albums are guaranteed to love this. Welcome to intelligent music. Now if you'll excuse me, I'm gonna go treat myself to another dose of those great guitar solos.

Quebec's Veteran Power Metallers Hanker are back with their new record Web Of Faith. Produced by Kataklysm's Jean-François Dagenais, let's say that the sound is great. Influenced by 80's metal like Iron Maiden, Judas Priest, Metallica, Helloween and the likes, Hanker stick to their guns and decided to give the fans what they expect. Pure Classic Heavy Metal and if you prefer... power metal. So don't expect them to push the boundaries of heavy metal cause that's not the case, but what they are doing, they're doing it the right way. The guitar work has been well done. It's been about 20 years that Hanker exist and it's easy to hear that! My main problem with this band is probably the vocal. Not that he can't sing (far from that!), but there's something that annoyed me. He's strong but his vocal is quite normal. It's good, no more no less. I also would have added more catchy chorus à la Stigmata. This chorus really stick to my mind at first listen. Add a catchy chorus in every song and this would be a classic in the genre. The rhythm section is solid as a rock and riff of Le Me Out is a good example. Very cool opening riff! The Maidenesque Do Or Die got a pretty cool dark vibe that I really like. The ballad Between The Devil And The Deep Blue Sea got nice melodies and the guitar solo fits the music perfectly. Good harmonies! Other highlights include: the amazing guitar work of The Search, Point Of No Return (I love to hear the bass like that!) and of course the 7 minutes title track that features good guitar harmonies, dark maidenesque verses, amazing solo and a strong chorus. If you're looking for a new power metal act that sound definitely 80's, this is the band you gotta hear but if you're looking for something new, that's not for you. Cliché but good, well done production, cool songs!

Hanker persiste et signe dans le registre heavy métal. Et force est d’admettre que s’ils s’attachent à un style qui n’est pas au goût du jour, les quatre musiciens maîtrisent bien leur art sur Web Of Faith.

À la voix, Pascal Cliche s’aventure sans mal dans un registre plus exigeant, Patrick Gravel propose des lignes pertinentes aux guitares, tandis que la section rythmique s’avère très dynamique. La troupe a aussi mûri au plan de l’écriture: malgré la ressemblance de certaines mélodies, les pièces se développent de façon intéressante, tantôt fluides (Inside Me), tantôt syncopées (Let Me Out).

On retrouve toutefois quelques ratés du côté de la réalisation. Derrière la console, Jean-François Dagenais (Kataklysm) a su donner une belle unité à l’ensemble, mais a visiblement éprouvé des ennuis à maîtriser la qualité sonore (distorsion, batterie manquant de rondeur). Web Of Faith est néanmoins un album solide, que les mordus du genre apprécieront.

Web Of Faith est le quatrième effort de nos Québécois (de Québec) de Hanker. C'est un groupe qui, avec le temps, a su se faire prendre au sérieux et acquérir une solide expérience, ça s'entend tout de suite. Oeuvrant dans un créneau difficile, celui du heavy traditionnel, où tout a déjà été fait ou presque, Hanker fait figure d'exception par un style bien à eux, étonnamment catchy et efficace. Les quatre membres du groupe ne perdent pas de temps à étaler leurs arguments: Empower ouvre le bal d'une rythmique redoutable ponctuée d'entraînants roulements de grosse caisse: le batteur Luc Guay. Hanker, à mi-chemin entre la joie et la tristesse, entrecoupé de screaming vocals bien réussis par le chanteur et guitariste Pascal Cliche. Plusieurs autres moments sont fort intéressants sur cet album; en fait, Hanker jouit de cette capacité à sortir des riffs qui feraient headbanger la plus recluse des nonnes du Vatican. Stigmata, Let Me Out, Do Or Die, Under Cover Of Darkness et Point Of No Return sont de bons exemples de cette réalité.

Par des mélodies de guitares relativement simples qui s'harmonisent avec le chant expressif de Pascal Cliche, Hanker dégage une émotion certaine, médiane entre la gloire et le désespoir, l'amour et la haine, l'ordre et le chaos. À mon avis, c'est là une qualité exceptionnelle que de pouvoir, chanson après chanson, conserver une telle unité au sein d'un groupe.

Glissons enfin un mot sur la production, signée Jean-François Dagenais (Kataklysm). Disons que j'ai été un peu déçu à la première écoute. Bien que rien ne nous échappe, j'ai l'impression que ça manque carrément de loudness. Les voix sont un peu lointaines et écho. Pourtant, JF Dagenais est un excellent producteur, mais qui travaille principalement avec des groupes de death. Qu'à cela ne tienne, car Hanker nous propose un honnête album de heavy metal de la vieille école. Il y a fort à parier qu'ils se retrouveront une fois de plus en Europe avec Web Of Faith!
