Hanker: real metal, nothing less

Hi there Metalheads...

Yesterday I discovered a great band: Hanker. This is metal at its finest.

I drove from Ottawa, Ontario to Beaupré, Québec (near Québec City), a 5 hours drive, to see Hanker perform a volunteer act where all the money was going to the local youth center. First of all, I had the opportunity to meet all four members of the band as well as their manager. These guys are absolutely down-to-earth, friendly and cool. I was really impressed seeing them talk to just about everyone in the place.

I bought their 2nd album «The Dead Ringer» yesterday afternoon just before going to the show. This is a must-have. I was very impressed. Their 3rd album should be released in November by Attack Records. Their first album is currently not available, but my understanding is that it will soon be re-released. I was extremely pleased just before the show when the singer came to me and handed me their first album (on cassette, since the CD isn't available) and told me: here, this is for you, since you came from so far. Needless to say I will guard this cassette with my life! :-)

They did almost all the songs from their upcoming album, as well as a number of songs from their first two albums. The place just rocked. They did three encores. These guys were there, not making a dime, but they gave their 110%. You could see they were pleased to be there, and their fans showed their appreciation.

All in all, I drove a total of 10-11 hours and do not regret it a second. I've just discovered a band I hope will enjoy the great success they deserve in the future. Thanks for a great show, Hanker.

I urge you to take a look at their web site at http://www.hankermetal.com. This very well-designed site is maintained by Pierre Bégin, who I also met at the show (he's the one who first told me about Hanker.) Another very friendly and cool guy.

Their web site has sound bytes (among other things), even a couple of complete songs along with the lyrics. If you're like me, you'll like what you hear and run to the record store! Of course, taste is taste, so you have to like that kind of metal (the best kind as far as I am concerned!)

I'd like to have your comments once you've checked out the sound bytes. You can e-mail me at michelr@metalcrypt.com.
